The definition of conflation is the merging of two separate entities into one. In this series I look at how the area of the “New Dutch Waterline” (Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie) has been taken over by the nature it had once destroyed. This defense line was created in 1815 in case of an attack on dutch soil from the south, if that were to happen the whole area would be flooded and the enemy troops would be slowed down. The line is 85 kilometres long en exists of about 40 forts in total.

Now, with no immediate threat of war, and having never been able to realize it’s full purpose and potential, the main attraction to these forts is the nature that surrounds, covers and protects it. The forts and nature have become one and the same.
