n this botanical cyanotype workshop you will discover the unique technique of cyanotype. This historic photographic printing process from 1842 – also known as a blueprint process – produces characteristic deep blue prints and forms a fascinating combination of photography, printmaking, and nature printing.
During this one-day cyanotype workshop, you will learn how to prepare your own light-sensitive paper and how to create unique botanical prints using plants, flowers, and sunlight. After the workshop you will have the knowledge to continue experimenting with cyanotype and botanical prints on your own.
What will you learn during the workshop?
During the workshop you will learn step by step how to create botanical cyanotypes:
- The history of the blueprint or cyanotype technique
- Preparing your own light-sensitive paper
- Creating compositions using leaves, flowers, and plants
- Working with sunlight or UV light to expose your design
- Developing and fixing the prints in water
- How to continue the process at home
By experimenting with different materials and transparencies you can create a wide range of blue tones, from light cyan to deep indigo.
It is also possible to print on textile during this workshop (textile is not included). If you would like to do this, please send me a message and I will send you instructions about suitable fabrics.
Creating botanical prints with cyanotype
We will work with natural materials such as flowers, leaves, and plants. By placing these objects on light-sensitive paper and exposing them to UV light, a beautiful botanical cyanotype print appears:
- the covered areas remain white
- the exposed areas turn a deep blue
The result is a unique botanical print that is both graphic and photographic.
Who is this workshop for?
This cyanotype workshop is suitable for:
- artists and creatives
- photographers
- graphic designers
- bookbinders
- anyone interested in alternative photographic processes
No previous experience is required; beginners are very welcome.
What will you take home?
At the end of the workshop you will take home:
- approximately 5 large sheets (50 × 65 cm) with your own botanical cyanotype prints
- knowledge of the cyanotype process so you can continue working at home
- your handmade prints, which are suitable for example as endpapers for books or for other creative projects
